Sports Physiotherapists are trained in assessing and treating sports injuries and getting people back to their active pursuits quickly. Sports physiotherapy involves making an accurate diagnosis of injuries that have occurred whilst playing sport or exercising. In the acute stage of an injury physiotherapy is focused on reducing pain and swelling. This is followed by techniques to assist speeding the healing process and getting you moving again. Good sports physiotherapy should involve rehabilitation exercises that are closely related to the activity or sport you want to return to. This is called sports specific exercise. This is to ensure that you are adequately prepared to recommence your sport as fast as possible but limit the risk of re-injury.
