Functional Movement Screening and injury prevention
Functional Movement Screening is a method of looking at how well someone performs movements that are important for everyday activities and athletics pursuits. These movements include squatting, lunging, stepping over a hurdle, mobility of the shoulders and stability of the core muscles. Functional Movement Screening helps to highlight differences of movement quality between the left and right sides of the body, as well as sub optimal movement patterns.
Differences of movement quality between the left and right sides of the body has been shown to increase injury risk. Your physiotherapist can then use the information gained from the screen to prescribe exercises to correct asymmetries between sides of the body and improve the quality of movement. This then helps to reduce injury recurrence or prevent injury from happening in the first place. The other obvious benefit of improved movement is enhanced athletic performance. Functional movement screening is great for anyone wanting to move better, reduce injury risk or excel on the sports field.
